Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
