Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
