The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical biological terror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that come with any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
