In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
